Lol what? I have to remember who Luke Brooks is before I care enough to get salty about him, there was actually a part of me hoping he’d get it, mostly for the afformentioned reason though, the process is deeply flawed and I really think the NRL having to write about Dally M Player of the Year Luke Brooks might’ve prompted a re-think, but alas an arguable nominee got his nose in front, so nothing will change

it didn't, it's always been flawed, i make this argument every year the Dally M's roll around since I've been able to form words, it's much more rewarding to flash-in-the-pan hot streaks and players who drive an otherwise average side over actual consistently great play, RLW's player of the year results always looked a lot more indicative of the best players over the course of a season, but of course they've gone tits up now so that's gone.

So who are the recent unworthy winners of the Dally M in your view?

I like this quote "The voting system is clearer and more transparent, while the formalisation of a judging panel which includes some of the most prominent minds in the game will give the awards additional credibility."

Ahh shit you’ve found me out, I travelled 1500km to Sydney for the weekend because I really like paying for price inflation on flights and hotels.

RCG was a fkn animal off the bench last year...
BJ was awesome in 2016 ....
Hayne was enormous for half a season 2014 as well.

Its clearly a flawed voting system, but so is the MVP in the NFL, NBA etc. No one will ever agree on it but surely there is a voting system that does get us bloody RTS as the best player in the game award

RCG was a starting prop for 19/26 games last year. "Bench player".
BJs never been the best centre in the game. Good. But never the best.
Hayne's a matter of opinion but he went missing for half the games and got 2 or 3 points even when he had a meh game.

Overvaluing "name" players (especially when they have had an average game) would be an issue on any voting system.

Hayne won also won Rugby League Week's player of the year in 2014 where everyone gets rated out of 10 every week.

RTS won it in 2015, and Cam Smith never won it.

I don't know if thats a "name" players issue or a "sexy position" issue.

A fullback who does fuck all for 78 minutes but ends up with 1 try and an assist is more likely to poll points then a forward who made 45 tackles and 100m.

IMO, Tohu Harris was better for NZ this year then RTS was. Plus others from outside NZ like J Turbo, Lolo, Kikau and Frizzell.

are you sure about RCG, from memory he wore a starting number a lot but was on the bench a fair bit ?
BJ was fucking unreal that year.
And yeah hayne was awesome for at least half the season. Like, hayne at his best for half a season - thats fucking good. No issue with him sharing the award with JT that year.

The positional awards are often contentious though, I do agree.

Wore #10 all year. Played rounds 1-16 and 24-26 as starting prop. 17-23 off the bench.

Is bench playerjudged the same eg. player with the most points gets the Dally M ? And if so is it only the points earned starting off the bench ? If so then if he played 6 games or 16 off the bench it shouldn't matter. The way a bench rotates there can be no or very little minutes between starting and bench forwards.

So back to where this started, why even have it ?

In the past, Dally M points only determined positional award for the top 3 total points getters (so RTS and Brooks in this case. Ponga misses out because RTS is same position)

After that positional awards were based on committee vote.

I read a report somewhere suggesting Leilua got centre of the year because he had more Dally M points than Latrell/someone else actually good. Not sure if that report was wrong or if they changed the system. Can't find a list of Dally M points past the top 10 to see how it panned out for some of the positions.

I think the report if it's teh same one, was saying the reason Latrell missed out was really cause he's in a gun team and that a number of other Roosters players or players in the other team in the same game just scored more points than him.  Latrell might have been good but the likes of Teddy and Cronk and maybe Fergo scored more points therefore there was no points left for Latrell.  BJ got a few points as he's in a shittier team and in some instances was one of the best 3 players on the field, even though those performances was no where near Latrell's standard and I guess he kind of just defaulted more points therefore had more points to get the claim as centre.

Fucking stupid and totally inacurrate way of getting the best player in each position.

Sorry, to clarify, I meant just the Dally M Winners. Not the silly positional awards.
