Scenario: Your team is within 10 meters of the goal line.
Choice: To put up a high kick or grubber the ball.

Essentially do you think the chance at a repeat set outweighs the chance of try scoring potential. Now I know both decisions can result in tries or repeat sets, but which do you prefer your team to go for?

I think this will certainly depend more on the team, grubber more likely to get a repeat set I would imagine. Less chance the opposition take a clean grab and get the 20m restart. That said having an attacking kick would be nice.

I think you are right, that it can come down to your team. When the Broncos had J. Yow Yeh and I. Folau I wished they would just put bombs up every set. Even out of their own 20 for them.

I just think there is so much more consistency in the grubber kick. There is still try potential, but even when it doesn't result in a try more times than not it results in a repeat set, and if they manage to collect the ball it is likely they wont make it out to the 20 meter line.

As a general rule I prefer the Grubber. Depends in the oppositions back 3 more than anything though

Hunt can do it all by himself from 10m out.

What teams would you put your Wingers up against?

I wouldn't be as worried about my wingers as the opposition ones. If they are suspect under the high ball you bomb them. A fullback with poor positional play I'd be grubbering against.

Because it doesn't involve catching the ball Coffee

    Just ask the Roosters.
They won the comp by bombing it on the last every set. Even from 40 out they would do it.
Pearce and Maloney had the least repeat sets in the comp yet they won.
It just depends on your wingers/outside backs

Yeah exactly. If my team had Tupou, SKD and Ferguson as outside backs I'd probably be bombing a truckload as well. Alternatively if my wingers were guys like Matt Utai, then I'd probably bomb more. Likewise I'd bomb to big Manu, but if he caught the first one I'd send a few grubbers his way for the rest of the game.

This question is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string.

Bombs produce best results from further out i say, even landing within 10-15 or in goal, thats when the try can come.

agree that is generally depends on your players + opposition players

i think generally a good grubber would be used much more then a bomb but i also think hitting a perfect bomb is a much harder task, cooper cronk is a specialist, His spiral looks like a scary thing to catch, fullbacks rarely looks comfortable and it never goes in goal on the full
