Because tries are mostly unreliable as a consistent stat. If you're paying a high price for a player that has 5 tries in the last 8 games, you're going to need that to continue otherwise you're overpaying.

Certain edge players like Crichton or Fifita are gonna find the line a few times throughout the season, but their base stats (tackles, run metres, TB average) mean they're gonna score well regardless. Basing decisions off a player's base stats and considering tries as a bonus usually works out well.

Wingers get a lot of tries, but their base stats are mostly garbage, so you've gotta be wary of getting caught up on someone that relies on tries for good scores.
