That's the thing mate, the knee, whilst being very vulnerable due to the forces applied to it in sport, actually has probably the strongest surrounding stabilising structures of all joints-Quads are ridiculous!  Ligaments tend to be there to stop the outside of normal Range Of Motion, which means if you are cautious, the joint can still function in some semblance of normality even when a ligament is gone.
