    From 2017

NRL clubs have agreed to a landmark proposal to introduce a cap on football club spending from next year.

A football department cap of $5.7 million will be introduced from next year after a meeting of club chief executives and NRL boss Todd Greenberg.

It was agreed that the figure will be lifted by four per cent in the next three years to enable staff to be given CPI salary rises.

Clubs will have until 2020 to get under the salary cap, and if they do not they will be taxed 37 per cent tax on whatever they overspend by.

Head coach and assistant coach salaries are included, as are training camps. Operational costs will also come out of the cap but not capital costs of centre of excellence.

NRL head of strategy David Silverton said it was an important move to curtail the rising costs of running club football departments.

“By putting the cap in place it will help ensure that our competition remains competitive and even,” Silverton said.

“It will also help ensure that NRL clubs do not overspend simply to keep up with other clubs.

“And that should help our clubs remain financially sustainable.”

The move will save the game about $10 million per season.

The Raiders, Canterbury and Parramatta were among the biggest spenders last year forking out about $8 million each to run their football programs.

While the likes of Brisbane, the Roosters, South Sydney, Melbourne, Penrith and Manly spent above the proposed $5.7 million.

Premiers Cronulla only spent about $4.5 million last year, while the Titans, the Tigers, St George Illawarra, the Warriors and Newcastle spent less than $5.7 million.

The football department cap will be reviewed in 2020.

    Raiders, Canterbury and Parramatta

Raiders, Canterbury and Parramatta? Just watch the Broncos get tarred with this "unfair advantage", whilst everyone ignores the big over-spenders trending downwards at a rapid rate.

Who mentioned the Broncos? We all know that they do their spending outside of salary caps...

Krump, with that avatar, you could piss on my (as yet, unfilled) fathers grave, and I'd still think you're a top bloke. Thinking of defecting to the Blues, to be honest.

Tigers released Lolohea from his 2019 contract and is heading overseas. Good luck to him, he didn't really take his opportunities with the Tigers with both hands this year, he was a bit of a disappointment.

Nothing written, but we will most likely be paying some of his contract for next year.

We are losing/lost a lot of our depth and fringe 1st graders for next year, hopefully clearing the decks for a big purchase like Nathan Cleary for 2020, can only hope. We have now let go, Milne, Felise, MWZ, Naiqama, Grant, Lolohea, McIllwrick and Bayley Sironen.

Lolohea was better at 6 than at 1 for us. With Benji and JRey having injury issues I would have liked to have seen him get a run there this year.

Wish him luck for the future

Ever since he was dropped after trials round 1 for no comment rumoured "weight" issues he was on the outer. He only ever played when there was no other option. May be it wasn't the only "weigh in" he failed and that's why he never got a chance to get back in Ivan's good books.

Here's Gary Jack's left nut from his 1983 Scanlens Footy card picture.

2005 we were 12th when we beat the Dragons at Kogarah. Then went on an 8 game winning streak to make the finals and then won the GF.

Nice to see that repeat itself

honestly... I think the sharks side is CLEARLY over the cap.
    They have:

    Fifita
    Prior
    Graham
    Lewis
    Gallen
    Woods
Townsend (wouldnt be cheap at this point in his career)
    Moylan
    Dugan
    Holmes

They have signed Josh Morris for next year too.

How the fuck can they fit all those quality players under the cap??? fuck me drunk its bad.

Woods is only 6 months and with the dogs paying him, it's probably only costing the sharks $100K this year. The word is Morris s taking a massive cut and has signed for $210K. Also I think they are banking on a retirement or 2 at the end of the year.

Lewis' retirement will free up a fair but, surely the sharks will be paying a fair chunk of woods contract come next season onwards.
Gallen is prob likely to retire at the end of the year too - but fuck me their current side is amazing.

    Played great against quality opposition

Must say we looked dam good last night, only problem is we will still miss the 8, we need to keep winning and rely on others now to choke

Souths were flatter than a Chinese hooker, but I'll take the win. The emphisis now is on us to keep winning. I think the Panthrs & Warriors will do their best to keep us in the race.

After the start to the year that they had, it would be such a shame if the tigers end up in the same position they always end up on - missing the 8 on points or there abouts
