Really sad stuff, there is too much of this in NRL.
Too much of a "I'm a tough guy, I can't talk about my feelings" attitude and expectation in the culture.
The NRL promotes promotes themselves as a safe space but still expects every player, manager, official, staff member to tough it out through this culture that has to change.
It's no surprise that there are no gay men in the in the NRL are publicly out, it's perceived that it will damage their relationships and their brand as a player.

Talk about depression, talk about what's troubling you.
Open yourself up to your mates. Tell them you aren't OK.
Don't listen to the negative thoughts in your head because your mates want to know and they want to help you.

Talk about what's getting you down. Get some help.

Yeah sorry must've missed that.
You know me, I get pretty wound up pretty quickly around issues like this.

We don't do enough.
The NRL doesn't do enough.
I don't do enough!

It's something that can be prevented by talking.

I had a friend of mine that I hadn't spoken to in a while, I had heard he wasn't doing too great through people just in passing. Comments like "yeah he's been miserable lately" "he doesnt want to hang out and do shit" so I flicked him a text just on a whim to see how he was doing and that if he wanted to talk over a beer. So we caught up and he spoke about how before he got that text he was ready to end it all. So caught up more and more and eventually he got enough confidence in himself to speak to other groups about it. Now he's running a program that speaks to all walks of life, he recently did a speech in front of 3,000 people - speaks to high level company executives who are earning millions and have everything they could ever want but still have dark thoughts. It's truly amazing to see how he's grown from someone that was nearly gone from this world to someone that is preventing this type of thing from happening.

It really is something we should be talking about more openly, I feel we're taking steps in the right direction because it's one of the biggest killers of men in Australia. If any of you blokes here are doing it tough I don't mind if you contact me and want to have a chat.
