Respect for the well reasoned reply, Dolphin Conspiracies.
I think we agree on the world view stance, we may disagree on specifics of our beliefs, but can respect each other's position.
I agree that many horrible things have been committed (colonisation, racism, systemic abuse etc.) by the church "in the name of Jesus" - and that is something that Christians need to own and work to make amends for. I'm just trying my best to walk out what I believe and treat others with dignity and respect. 

As for the idea of sexuality being foundational to identity - I don't pretend to know what it's like to be gay or trans or any other sexual identity on the rainbow.
However, the young man in question, when he 'came out' did say that he didn't see himself simply as a sexual identity - he specifically wanted his teachers and peers to know that he was a son, friend, student, employee etc. who happened to be gay. 
I can only affirm his perspective on his identity.

What I'm truly impressed about this forum is that we can have these conversations.
