Thinking about it, it’s actually a weird one. It means what you think, but yeah, only heard it in a sports context and don’t know exactly where it comes from.

Maybe it’s you can be rapt about something ie think it’s excellent, exciting. And that transformed into big raps? Yeah I got nothing on this one

Feels like some sort of 1930s boxing reference. I got nothing either Laughing

    Awesome, thanks all

Last question about Aussie league sayings

Why when a young player with good potential do you have big “wraps” on them

(Is that spelt right and what is it short for, what’s the etymology?)

If someone answers that I’ll die happy

I'm not 100% sure but I'll have a stab here

I reckon it comes from rap sheet. If you've got big raps on you you've got a long rap sheet (i.e reputation, think it actually is a criminal record but in this case it's a reputation for being good)

Now I need to know too. I would guess bastardisation of rapt to wrapped then big wraps. But no idea and Internet not instantly helpful

EDIT: Lchys is a decent guess as well

It's 100% spelled wraps and nothing to do with rap sheet

Probably nothing to do with film slang that's a wrap meaning job done. It's only Aussie NZ slang

This is a pretty reasonable guess and is what I’ll believe henceforth if no one confirms anything else

A bit if homework for all forumites, ask your mates, discord, Twitter followers see if anyone knows definitively

Ok, I have the Cassell Dictionary of Slang (great book) and have taken it down from the shelf. It defines that usage of "wrap" or "rap" to be 1950s Australian "boost or give excessive praise to" derived from "wrap up" as in wrap up with a bow.

In that case I believe it comes from the Ancient Egyptian tradition of wrapping up and mummifying their greatest rugby league footballers. King Tutankhamen was quite a handy number 7 back in the day considering he played in sandals.

Steve Price was the mummy. Kept lurching forward no matter what.

Internet fails, the old fashioned non-digitised version known as “books” provides the answer.

Amazing it’s only 70 years old at most and everyone’s forgotten where it’s from
