My daughter is in U11s now, and they are starting to play something that looks like football. They are no superstars, but they can generally keep position, and can attempt to pass to a team mate.
Next year they have to play with the offside rule though, which is going to hurt a couple of the goal-hangers in her team.
U8s is the first year with a keeper in our leagues here. Years before that they just play 4-a-side with no goals so it is a bit of rolling maul around the ball, converting to positional play is taking some time to adjust to.
Heaps of times we'll get a throw in on half way, and a forward will go to take the throw-in, with absolutely everyone else on the team behind him
Or we'll win a corner with 1 person taking the corner, another about 2m away next to him, and everyone else back on half way. And if you tell a defender they are allowed to go up for a corner then you'll never see them again.
Yeah - U8s the first year they have keepers here too - U6s and U7s 5 a side on smaller fields with training goals. They got quite good at moving up the field by passing on the smaller pitch, which means now they are trying to pass beyond their range when they would be better off running it. They'll figure it out.
