James Hooper on the Grant/Momo loan deal

“Last week both clubs were told they would have an answer by early in the week. It got to Wednesday when all the teams were travelling to Perth for the Nines and they were told Friday.

Then the real doozy, drum roll please, they were told they’d have an answer by 5pm on Monday.

As of 5.20pm Monday night, no one was any the wiser.

The NRL claims says the Integrity Unit was in touch with Melbourne late Monday and have advised as it sits at the moment, the deal can’t go through”

    Sad for all involved really

What I don't understand about the Grant/Momo swap deal, is that the prevailing sentiment amongst league fans is that the NRL are idiots for not letting the Storm break the salary cap?

Are all these people saying the deal has to be done going to be happy if the Storm win the comp this year with a team knowingly over the cap (even if its only by a small amount)

If Melbourne were looking at breaking the cap under almost any other circumstances, I can tell you how many people would be angry at the NRL for not letting them do it. It would not be a big number.

The whole issue is that the Storm have to pay Momos salary, which puts them over the cap.

The original arrangement between storm and tigers was that Tigers continue to pay momo and atorm continue to pay grant. NRL said no to that (quite rightly imo)

It seems trivial over 15k but where does the line get drawn if you let this go through.

I feel like something could be worked out.. eg Grant joins Tigers immediately.. Momo joins Storm in round 5, or something (if both teams really want it to happen)

Fox Sports has been told the Tigers intend to try and proceed with the Storm agreement to release Grant to the Concord-based club for 12 months 🧐

What is your issue with them continuing to pay their own players wages?

Its trivial for two low profile players but opens up all sorts of loopholes that will no doubt be exploited by savvy clubs if this was allowed.

Do you think the Storm should be able to have a first grader in their squad without his salary counting towards their cap.

If that's OK we might see some interesting loan deals suggested in future.

I mean I can't wait for the QLD coalition where every year Cowboys, Broncos and Titans rotate their entire teams out on loans to build monsters.

I must've missed this latest info. Last I heard before I went away was each club would pay the player on their list (ie Storm pays Grant, Tigers pay Momo)

Wishart in the Dragons squad for the trial Beating Heart

I think he’s currently in the halves in Flegg but if we run Sailor and Wishart on the wings in a few years...
