Pretty sure the Tigers don't get subsidised players, instead they subsidise players now with other teams. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Ponga leaves the Cowboys for the Knights, and the Tigers still somehow manage to pay $150K/year of his salary.

Jason Taylor is turning that around. Corey Parker is paying $250K a year of Aaron Woods next contract because he's being so loyal to the Tigers

Parramatta utility Clint Gutherson has re-signed with the Eels for a further two seasons. He will work under the tutelage of Brett Kimmorley, who will join the Eels’ coaching staff in 2017 to mentor the halves.

I kinda hope Ponga stays at the Cowboys next season, that way he can develop there in a winning culture surrounded by good players - rather than come to Newie and get ass raped every week

Its looking like he will be 20 by the time he gets to the knights so thats a big difference from signing an 18 year old

I hope it works out for the Knights, a club that deserves some choices to come off and stick. But at that price for an unproven guy, I'm bamboozled. No logic to it.
Doesnt matter if he comes good, he isnt worth that dollar at this time.

Reliable hooker Kurt Baptiste has extended his stay at Canberra for a further two years.

    Everything I said stands true.

Also, good post mate, you openly say that you havent really seen him play then go on to state its a bad call. Another belter from you there.

We either play Jake Mamo at fullback and lose every game for the next 5 years, or we take a punt on Ponga, (for what could end up being a reasonable amount of money if he lives up to the hype 100% true) and if he fails - we are in the same position we were in before. Its  risky but clearly a great move from the Knights and a step in the right direction. Do you really think that the club wouldnt have done its homework with him? They might have been recruiting him for years for all we know.

It was reported that the cowboys offered him 500k a season, were they stupid for doing that? They would know more about him than anyone and they were prepared to make him the highest paid rookie in history - Newie is just more desperate and less of a desirable destination as far as team wise goes so they had to pay more.

What would you propose the club do? Invest in mediocre established players? Pay even more for an established player to get them to come to newcastle?

It is a risk, a big one, but it is obviously a calculated risk. It is an investment that may or may not work out. We have to try something! We are in a similar situation to what canberra was in a few years ago. Have to pay overs to get anyone to the club. Now players Want to go there. Paying the best young prospect in the game is a no brainer, and will lead to a ripple effect. How did the raiders rebuild?
They bought a couple of good players from england, they bought a halfback and jagged a good 6, then developed some local young blokes. Now they are a fucking powerhouse.

My problem too is that he is playing behind a fairly shit forward pack with no hooker, maybe we will get someone like seggy in a year or 2. We need some good front rowers so badly. Everywhere else but front row and hooker is covered.

Signing Ponga is clearly and indisputably is a step in the right direction.

I would propose they do the same as Canberra and focus on building team culture first and foremost.

Sometime throwing exorbitant amounts of money at an unproven young bloke has the opposite effect.

Has the backflip rule changed ?? Saw an article quoting 10 days for Ponga. I thought it was June 30 the year prior and 10 days if after June 30 which is what caught JAC out when he signed with the Storm then couldn't flip.

That is exactly what Brown is doing at the club. Its clearly evident with all the high paid dead wood he has fucked off, and is continuing to fuck off. Fucking off the guys who are just happy to be there is what ruins a club's culture. Bringing in a new kid who is supposed to be a gun will hardly ruin a club's culture.
From everything I have read, he seems as if he is a smart, switched on kid with a good work ethic and what seems like unlimited potential on the footy field.

I mean, fuck. his own club wanted to keep him for 500k a year, does that not tell you something?????

I think the blackflip rule changed mate because it was fucking stupid. It is now 10 days.

The Parrmatta Eels have confirmed the signing of New Zealand and Samoa international Frank Pritchard for 2017.

Pritchard joins brother Kaysa at the team after a single season with Hull F.C. in the Super League.

Newcastle are improving their recruitment. It was only a couple of years ago that they spent $700k on Hodkinson, Ponga is a step up from that.
